The Trump administration has moved to freeze $2.2 billion in grants and $60 million in contracts for Harvard University after the school declined to adopt federal recommendations. These included ending diversity programs, banning face coverings at protests, and reassessing its admissions criteria.
The decision was executed by a Department of Education unit focused on tackling antisemitism. Former President Trump has accused several elite universities of leaning too far left, especially as campus protests over Israel and Gaza intensified over the past year.
According to Reuters, Harvard now plans to raise $750 million through bond sales to reduce the impact of the lost federal support. The university has not indicated any plans to reverse its stance.
