U.S. President Donald Trump spoke with Chinese President Xi Jinping for about 90 minutes, according to Trump’s post on Truth Social. The call, made at Trump’s request, focused mainly on trade and was described by both sides as productive.
President Trump said the call “resulted in a very positive conclusion for both countries” and that the U.S. and China would resume trade talks soon. He added that “our respective teams will be meeting shortly.”
Trump also stated that President Xi had “graciously invited the First Lady and me to visit China,” and he had extended a reciprocal invitation. He promised to share details with the media about the upcoming meeting.
Xi, according to Chinese media, emphasized the importance of:
Strengthening cooperation in diplomacy, economy, military, and law enforcement
Using the existing U.S.-China trade consultation mechanisms effectively
Handling the Taiwan issue “carefully” to avoid conflict
Respecting each other’s concerns and working toward a win-win outcome
Eliminating interference in bilateral ties
Xi also said dialogue and cooperation are the only right choices for U.S.-China relations and warned against allowing a small number of “Taiwan independence separatists” to provoke confrontation.
President Trump also commented that there “should no longer be any questions respecting the complexity of rare earth products,” suggesting progress on trade-related topics.Both leaders expressed optimism about future engagements.
