New daily data shows that container traffic from China to the United States is falling sharply.

If this trend continues, American stores could start running out of goods in just a few weeks. Consumers and companies that rely on Chinese products may soon face shortages, similar to what happened during the Covid-19 pandemic.

This supply shock could also push prices higher. Many goods sold in the US heavily depend on imports from China, and with fewer shipments arriving, inflation could rise again.

The job market is likely to feel the impact as well. Starting in May, there could be major layoffs in sectors like trucking, logistics, and retail. Small businesses—such as local toy shops, hardware stores, and men’s clothing stores—may be hit especially hard.

Given that about 9 million Americans work in trucking-related jobs and around 16 million work in retail, the economic risks from this collapse are serious.
