Tesla’s China-Made EV Sales Drop in April While BYD Grows Stronger

Tesla faced a decline in sales of its China-made electric vehicles (EVs) in April 2025. According to data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), Tesla sold 58,459 vehicles that were manufactured in China, which is 6% lower compared to April last year.

Sales of its popular locally produced models—Model 3 and Model Y—also dropped sharply by 25.8% when compared to March 2025. This monthly decline suggests weakening demand or increasing competition in the electric vehicle market.

On the other hand, Tesla’s top Chinese competitor, BYD, recorded a strong performance. The company, which makes both electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids under its Ocean and Dynasty series, saw its passenger vehicle sales rise by 19.4% year-on-year to reach 372,615 units in April.

This sharp contrast shows how local players like BYD are gaining more ground in China’s rapidly growing EV market, while global companies like Tesla face increasing challenges.
