Tesla has taken the first step toward launching its robotaxi service in California. According to Bloomberg, the company has received initial approval from regulators, though it still needs multiple permits before fully rolling out the service.
The California Public Utilities Commission has granted Tesla a transportation charter-party carrier permit. This type of license is usually given to companies that provide chauffeur-driven rides.
With this permit, Tesla can manage a fleet of vehicles for pre-scheduled employee transportation. However, it does not yet allow the company to operate a ride-hailing service or deploy autonomous cars.
Tesla had submitted the application in November 2024. To move forward with its robotaxi plans, the company must still apply for additional regulatory approvals.
