In a significant and carefully planned move, the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force jointly carried out Operation Sindoor in the early hours of Wednesday. This marks the first time since the 1971 war that all three military branches have conducted a coordinated strike on foreign soil, targeting terror camps across the border in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
The operation was launched around 1:44 am, just two weeks after the devastating terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed the lives of 26 civilians, including one Nepali national. Most of the victims were tourists. India had vowed a strong response, and Operation Sindoor is being seen as a fulfillment of that promise.
What Was Targeted?
The Indian forces identified and struck nine terror hubs, all of which were believed to be directly involved in planning and supporting attacks on Indian territory. The strikes specifically avoided any Pakistani military facilities to prevent escalation into a full-blown conflict.
Among the key targets were:
Jaish-e-Mohammed’s headquarters in Bahawalpur
Lashkar-e-Taiba’s base in Muridke
Both these outfits have long been accused of fueling terrorism in India.
How the Strikes Were Carried Out
The mission was executed using advanced precision-guided munitions and kamikaze drones, also known as loitering munitions. These drones can hover in the air and strike once the target is locked, causing high-impact destruction with minimal collateral damage.
Strategic Precision and Restraint
According to defence sources, the operation was meticulously designed to avoid civilian casualties and any engagement with Pakistani forces. This shows India’s focus on targeting terror infrastructure, not sovereign assets. The goal was to send a strong message without provoking unnecessary escalation.
Leadership Oversight and Diplomacy
Prime Minister Narendra Modi was kept informed throughout the night as the mission unfolded. Following the operation, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval briefed key international allies, including U.S. NSA and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, sharing a detailed account and reaffirming India’s commitment to combating cross-border terrorism.
India will hold a press briefing on ‘Operation Sindoor’ at 10 a.m. on Wednesday in New Delhi.
The name “Operation Sindoor” refers to the red powder Hindu married women wear in their hair. During the April 22 attack, survivors said men were killed in front of their wives and children.

“We have always said we don’t want to act against India. If India steps back, we will also reduce our military response. But if they keep attacking, we will have to defend ourselves,” Asif explained.
