The Kremlin issued several key updates on Monday amid growing tensions in the Middle East following U.S. strikes on Iran.
According to the Russian government, President Vladimir Putin spoke with the Prime Minister of Iraq as part of ongoing diplomatic efforts.
Later today, President Putin is also scheduled to meet with Iran’s Foreign Minister. The Kremlin said the agenda of the meeting is “absolutely clear” and will focus on the current crisis. When asked what Iran expects from Russia, the Kremlin said the Iranian minister would present Tehran’s proposals during the visit.
Russia expressed deep regret over the recent U.S. strikes on Iranian territory, calling them a serious escalation that has drawn more countries into the conflict. The Kremlin warned that the situation is entering a new and dangerous phase.
Officials added that the condition of Iran’s nuclear facilities after the strikes, as well as any potential radiation risks, are still being evaluated. The Kremlin said the overall situation in Iran is concerning.
Despite rising tensions, the Kremlin emphasized that talks with the U.S. on Iran, Ukraine, and bilateral relations are taking place on separate tracks. Russia confirmed that communication lines with the United States remain open, and a phone call between President Putin and President Trump could be arranged quickly if needed. However, there are no plans for such a call at this time.
Putin Meets Iran’s Foreign Minister Amid Rising Tensions, Calls Attacks on Iran “Groundless”
Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi in Moscow as tensions in the region continue to rise. Putin called the recent attacks on Iran “groundless” and said Russia is trying to support the Iranian people during this difficult time.
He added that Russia’s official position on the current events had already been shared by the Foreign Ministry. Putin said this meeting was a good chance to find ways to reduce tensions and move toward a peaceful solution. He also asked Araqchi to pass on his best wishes to Iran’s President and Supreme Leader.
Araqchi thanked Russia for standing with Iran and strongly criticized the actions of the U.S. and Israel, calling them “illegitimate.” He praised Russia for taking a clear stance and said the Iranian leadership also sends their regards to Putin.
