Japan’s Tariff Negotiator Akazawa Shares Key Updates on US Trade Deal

Japan’s chief tariff negotiator, Akazawa, said that Japan and the United States have built a strong relationship based on mutual understanding and trust regarding their trade deal.

He clarified that there is no difference in understanding between the two countries on the terms of the agreement.

When asked about U.S. Treasury Secretary Bessent’s comments on conducting a quarterly review of the deal, Akazawa declined to comment.

He also mentioned that there have been no discussions with President Trump or other U.S. officials about how the trade deal should be implemented.

Akazawa stated that Japan is not currently considering signing a legally binding version of the agreement.

Regarding the agreement to purchase 100 Boeing aircraft, he said the deal includes existing purchase plans already in place.
