Japan is considering placing long-range missiles on Kyushu, its southwestern island, to strengthen security in the nearby Nansei island chain. This region is close to Taiwan, and Japan is concerned about the possibility of a Chinese invasion, local media reported.
The missile deployment is expected to begin around March 2026, as part of Japan’s plan to develop “counterstrike capabilities.” This would allow the country to target enemies in case of a conflict, according to sources cited by Kyodo News.
China views Taiwan as its territory and has warned Japan against interfering. Last week, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi reiterated the “one-China principle,” stressing that Taiwan belongs to China. He also cautioned that those linking Taiwan’s security to Japan’s could create problems for Japan itself.
