The Indian government has issued executive orders to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), asking it to block more than 8,000 accounts within India. The directive includes accounts belonging to international news organizations and several well-known users on the platform.
In response, X has decided to withhold access to these accounts only within India, meaning the accounts will still be visible in other countries.
X Disagrees with Government Orders
X stated that it disagrees with the Indian government’s demands. The platform believes that these orders affect the freedom of expression of users and press freedom, especially when they target journalists and international news agencies.
The company also mentioned that it is exploring all possible legal options to challenge the order and protect user rights.
Compliance While Challenging
Although X is complying with the orders for now, it has made it clear that this does not mean agreement. The company is following the orders only to avoid penalties or bans in India, which is one of its biggest user markets.
