India’s CERT-In has issued a high-severity alert for WhatsApp Desktop users on Windows, warning of a serious security flaw (CVE-2025-30401). This issue affects users running versions older than 2.2450.6. The flaw is linked to a misconfiguration between MIME types and file extensions, which can lead to improper handling of attachments.
Attackers can exploit this vulnerability by sending malicious files via WhatsApp. If the user opens such a file, it could allow the attacker to run harmful code or spoof the system, possibly leading to data theft or full control of the device.
Users are strongly advised to update their WhatsApp Desktop app immediately to avoid the risk of remote attacks and system compromise.
With over 400 million users in India, WhatsApp is a key communication tool — and now, a serious warning has been issued for those using its desktop version on Windows. A new security flaw could allow hackers to access your system just by sending a harmful file.
To stay safe, users should immediately update WhatsApp Desktop through the Microsoft Store. The latest version includes a fix for this issue. Authorities also remind everyone to regularly update their devices, as similar threats have recently been reported for Android 15 and iPhone 16 users. Staying updated is the best defense.
