Fugitive Mehul Choksi Arrested in Belgium in $2 Billion PNB Scam

Indian businessman Mehul Choksi, wanted for his role in the 2018 Punjab National Bank scam worth almost $2 billion, has reportedly been arrested in Belgium, according to a report by Reuters quoting a source from India’s Enforcement Directorate.

Mehul Choksi, 65, was reportedly arrested on Saturday and is now in jail. According to the Economic Times, police acted on two open-ended arrest warrants issued by a Mumbai court, dated May 23, 2018, and June 15, 2021.

Choksi, along with his nephew Nirav Modi—who is currently facing extradition proceedings in London—is wanted by both the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate for allegedly orchestrating a ₹13,850 crore fraud involving Punjab National Bank.
