Autos Play a Key Role in US Trade

According to data from the Census Bureau and Apollo Chief Economist, most important US imports from countries like Mexico, Germany, Japan, South Korea, Canada, and the United Kingdom are either cars or car parts. For example, the top US import from Mexico is car parts, while from Germany, Japan, South Korea, and the UK, it is cars.

Even beyond the most important import, the second and third biggest imports also often involve trucks, buses, or more car parts. Only in China’s case are cell phones and computers more significant than automobiles.

This shows that cars and car-related goods play a major role in shaping US trade relationships and negotiations with its key trading partners.
