China’s tech giant Baidu has unveiled two new artificial intelligence models, ERNIE 4.5 and X1, as it strives to gain an edge in the fast-evolving AI industry.
ERNIE 4.5 is a multimodal AI model designed to handle various types of data, including text, images, video, and audio. Baidu claims it has improved language abilities, better logic, enhanced memory, and advanced comprehension skills. Additionally, the model is said to have a “high EQ,” allowing it to understand internet memes and satire effectively.
Meanwhile, the X1 model focuses on reasoning and problem-solving. According to Baidu, X1 is China’s first deep-thinking AI capable of using tools independently. The company highlights its ability to understand complex situations, plan strategically, reflect on decisions, and evolve over time.
Baidu has faced tough competition in the AI space, particularly as new players like Chinese startup DeepSeek introduce cost-effective AI models that claim to match or surpass leading U.S. models. Despite Baidu positioning its Ernie chatbot as a strong competitor to OpenAI’s GPT-4, widespread adoption has been a challenge.
The AI landscape continues to heat up as companies race to develop powerful and efficient models. With Baidu’s latest advancements, it aims to solidify its position in China’s AI market and beyond.
