Counterpoint Research reports a 19% decline in Apple’s iPhone sales in China during the March quarter, marking its weakest performance since the Covid outbreak in 2020.
This decline pushed Apple down to third place in the Chinese market, trailing behind local brands like Honor Device and Xiaomi Corp.
Despite the overall market growth of 1.5%, local brands spearheaded the surge, while Apple saw a decrease in sales.
Huawei Technologies, in contrast, experienced a significant 70% surge, indicating a robust recovery in the premium smartphone segment where Apple once held dominance.
Apple encounters additional challenges as global iPhone shipments dropped by nearly 10% in the first quarter, according to IDC.
Amidst this shift, Apple’s position in China’s smartphone market slipped from 19.7% in the first quarter of 2023 to 15.7% in the initial months of 2024, according to Counterpoint Research data.
Meanwhile, Huawei experienced a notable uptick in its market share, climbing from 9.3% to 15.5% during the same timeframe. This surge underscores Huawei’s strengthening presence within the Chinese smartphone landscape, further challenging Apple’s traditional dominance.
