Amazon has selected Darlington, UK, as the location for its first drone delivery service, Prime Air. The company is currently planning to launch deliveries from its fulfilment centre just outside the town. As part of this process, Amazon will submit a planning application to the local authorities and seek approval from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) for drone operations in the area.

The aim is to offer fast deliveries, with packages expected to arrive in under 60 minutes, and potentially in as little as 30 minutes once the service is fully operational. Amazon has previously tested drone deliveries in the UK and already offers the service in certain US locations.

This move is part of Amazon’s wider plan to expand its drone delivery services across the UK. The company is engaging with the local community, organizing public events to gather feedback. However, there are still regulatory hurdles to clear before the service can officially launch, including obtaining necessary permissions and meeting safety standards.

Local leaders, such as Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen, have shown strong support for the project, believing it could bring valuable jobs and investments to the region. Amazon has emphasized its commitment to working with regulators and the community to ensure the service is both safe and efficient. While the exact launch date is uncertain, the company is actively working through the regulatory process to bring drone deliveries to Darlington.
