US Files Lawsuit Against Apple Alleging iPhone Monopoly

A wide-ranging lawsuit has been filed by the US against Apple, alleging the tech giant’s operation of an iPhone monopoly.

In New Jersey federal court, the U.S. Department of Justice lodged an antitrust lawsuit against Apple, accusing the tech giant of antitrust violations concerning the iPhone. The lawsuit saw the participation of 15 states and the District of Columbia alongside the DOJ.

Here are five reasons cited:

Hindering Super App Innovation: Apple’s actions impede the emergence of innovative apps, stifling competition against its own services.

Restricting Cloud Streaming: The company’s limitations on cloud-based gaming and streaming platforms limit consumer choices for high-quality digital entertainment.

Messaging App Restrictions: Apple’s policies obstruct the development and usage of cross-platform messaging apps, reinforcing the exclusivity of its ecosystem.

Limited Smartwatch Compatibility: By exclusively pairing the Apple Watch with iPhones, Apple locks users into its ecosystem, increasing switching costs to rival brands.

Undermining Non-Apple Devices: Apple’s practices disadvantage smart devices from other manufacturers, consolidating its dominance in the market.

Apple Inc. $AAPL vehemently opposes the U.S. Department of Justice’s (DOJ) antitrust lawsuit, arguing it jeopardizes the company’s foundational values and innovation. Apple contends that the DOJ’s move risks its capacity to integrate hardware, software, and services, setting a precedent detrimental to technological advancement. Initiated in 2019, the lawsuit alleges Apple restricts competitors’ access to iPhone features, marking the third such case against the company in 14 years.

US Attorney General Garland stated that Apple has retained its dominance through exclusionary practices.
