The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), which manages cyber security issues for the Electronics and IT Ministry, has issued an urgent warning about several security weaknesses found in Android devices. These problems could let attackers access private data, gain higher system privileges, or run code remotely.
Devices with Qualcomm and MediaTek processors, including many Android phones and tablets, are affected. These flaws let attackers bypass device security without needing extra permissions.
The regular monthly Android Security bulletins are crucial for maintaining Android security. Qualcomm has already provided fixes to device manufacturers before the August Android Security bulletin was released.
CERT-In has indicated that Android versions 12, 12L, 13, and 14 are vulnerable due to issues in the Android Framework, System, Kernel, and components from ARM, Imagination Technologies, MediaTek, Qualcomm, and Qualcomm’s proprietary components.
To stay safe, CERT-In advises users to quickly install any updates from their device manufacturers. Users should make sure their Android devices are using the latest software, only download apps from trusted sources, and enable automatic updates for apps and the operating system.
Users should also be careful and avoid clicking on unknown messages, emails, or links, especially those asking for personal information or credentials, as these could be phishing attempts. If a device is suspected of being compromised, performing a factory reset may be necessary to remove malware.
Earlier this week, CERT-In also issued a serious warning to Apple users about multiple vulnerabilities in iPhones, iPads, and Macs. These issues could cause data breaches and service interruptions.
Affected software includes iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, tvOS, visionOS, and Safari. Apple has released security updates, and users should update their devices to the latest versions to remain protected.
