Wes Morrill, the lead engineer behind Tesla’s Cybertruck, has suggested that the company intends to roll out additional supercharger stalls designed to accommodate trailers. This initiative seeks to streamline the charging process for Tesla owners by allowing them to charge their vehicles without having to detach the trailer. With Tesla’s supercharger network already dominating a significant portion of North America’s fast chargers, expansion plans include new installations in Las Vegas, New Jersey, Florida, and West Virginia. Moreover, the update will be integrated into the in-vehicle user interface, simplifying the task of locating suitable charging stations for towing purposes.
The Supercharger team continuously seeks opportunities to deploy these installations in new areas. The aim is to display trailer-friendly stalls on the in-vehicle UI, enhancing convenience during trailer-assisted road trips,” stated the Cybertruck lead engineer in a post on X. Morrill also shared an image of a matte black-wrapped Cybertruck towing a trailer, situated in a pull-through supercharger lane.
Displaying trailer-friendly stalls on the in-vehicle display will assist drivers towing trailers in selecting suitable charging locations tailored to their requirements. These stalls enable drivers to charge their vehicles without the need to detach the trailer.
Tesla boasts the highest towing capacity within its lineup with the Cybertruck, capable of towing up to 11,000 pounds. In comparison, the Model Y SUV offers a towing capacity of 3,500 pounds, while the Model X can tow up to 5,000 pounds.
According to Tesla, its superchargers constitute three-quarters of all fast chargers in North America. These superchargers enable recharging of up to 200 miles in just 15 minutes.
Tesla announced on Thursday the opening of 48 new superchargers in Las Vegas, 16 stalls in New Jersey, 20 in Florida, and eight in West Virginia. It remains uncertain whether any of these newly installed supercharger stalls incorporate a pull-through charging lane.
