X Challenges Government’s Censorship Powers in Karnataka High Court

X Challenges Government’s Censorship Powers in Karnataka High CourtElon Musk’s company, X (formerly Twitter), has filed a legal case in the Karnataka High Court against the Indian government, arguing that its actions amount to illegal censorship.

X claims that the government is misusing Section 79(3)(b) of the IT Act along with the Sahyog Portal to block content without proper legal checks. The company argues that these actions bypass important legal protections and create an unregulated system of censorship.

According to X, the government should be following Section 69A of the IT Act when issuing content takedown orders. This section, as confirmed by the Supreme Court in Shreya Singhal v. Union of India (2015), is the only legally valid way to block content. However, X says the government is ignoring this and wrongly using another legal provision instead.

The legal challenge comes at a time when the Central government has also asked X to explain certain responses given by its AI chatbot, Grok.
