Trump and Xi Meeting Could Boost Trade, Says Treasury Secretary

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has expressed optimism about a significant breakthrough in the upcoming U.S.-China trade talks. The current trade truce between the two countries is set to expire on November 10. Bessent noted that a potential meeting between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping during their visit to Korea could help improve relations and advance negotiations.

Fed Chair Selection

The Treasury has finished interviewing approximately 11 candidates for the Federal Reserve chair position. The first round of interviews is expected to conclude next week. Following this, 3 to 5 top contenders will be presented to President Trump for consideration.

Government Spending and Politics

Bessent dismissed concerns about federal layoffs and rejected reversing the tax-act spending cuts. He criticized Democrats, calling their spending plans “inflationary” and described leaders like Senator Chuck Schumer and Representative Hakeem Jeffries as “weak” and “discombobulated.”

Government Shutdown Concerns

Bessent warned that a government shutdown could negatively impact GDP, economic growth, and working Americans. He emphasized that the shutdown is not the right forum to debate fiscal and political issues.

Agriculture and Soybean Farmers

On the agricultural front, Bessent criticized China for using soybeans as leverage in trade negotiations. He said that new support for U.S. farmers, especially soybean producers, will be announced soon. He also warned about potential storage shortages due to a record harvest this year.

Argentina Swap Line

Regarding Argentina, Bessent stated that the U.S. is offering a swap line to protect strategic interests, rather than providing direct aid. He expressed confidence in President Javier Milei ahead of the country’s midterm elections.

Overall, Treasury Secretary Bessent’s comments highlight key developments in trade, finance, and agriculture, showing the U.S. government’s proactive approach to economic challenges both domestically and internationally.
