Tesla Faces Mixed Performance in Europe to End 2025

Tesla’s December numbers show a slowdown in several key European markets. In Spain, registrations fell about 44 percent year over year to 1,794 cars, leaving full year sales down roughly 4 percent. Other markets also weakened, with December registrations dropping 66 percent in France and 71 percent in Sweden. Sweden also recorded a 67 percent decline for the full year. Meanwhile, electric vehicles overall continued to grow, with Spain’s EV registrations rising nearly 95 percent according to ANFAC.

Norway was the clear bright spot. Tesla sales there surged nearly 90 percent in December to 5,679 cars, supported by strong demand in a market where fully electric vehicles accounted for 96 percent of all new car sales last year.

BYD Becomes the Top Global EV Seller in 2025

BYD has passed Tesla to become the biggest seller of fully electric cars in 2025. The company delivered 2,256,704 battery electric vehicles, up 28% from 2024, beating Tesla’s expected 1.7 million. Growth was powered by affordable models, strong leadership in China, and exports that crossed 1 million vehicles.

Including plug in hybrids, BYD sold 4,545,423 passenger vehicles in 2025, an 8% year over year increase. Even though plug in hybrid demand softened, BYD’s size and export strength helped it keep the lead. The company’s shares rose after the update as investors reacted to its clear advantage over Tesla.

What This Means for Tesla Investors

The results show that Tesla is maintaining strong production capability while expanding energy storage deployments at record levels. Deliveries missed expectations slightly, but core demand for Model 3/Y remains solid.

Investors will now look ahead to the upcoming earnings call for deeper insights into margins, growth strategy, and 2026 outlook.
