President Trump Announces 50% Tariff on Copper, Effective August 1, 2025

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a 50% tariff on copper imports, set to take effect from August 1, 2025, following a national security assessment.

President Trump stated that copper is vital for key industries such as semiconductors, defense systems, aircraft, ships, ammunition, lithium-ion batteries, data centers, and hypersonic weapons. He emphasized that copper is the second most-used material by the Department of Defense.

He criticized previous policies for weakening the U.S. copper industry and said the new tariff aims to revive domestic production, reduce reliance on foreign sources, and enhance national security.

“This move will help rebuild a strong and dominant American copper industry,” Trump said, calling it a step toward restoring America’s Golden Age.

Trump’s Copper Tariffs Drive Price Surge, May Lead to Higher Costs for Consumers

Copper is a key material used in electronics, machinery, and automobiles. With President Trump announcing a 50% tariff on copper imports starting August 1, 2025, prices have surged and concerns are rising over the potential impact on American consumers.

The U.S. imported $17 billion worth of copper last year, with Chile as the top supplier, providing $6 billion worth. Following Trump’s announcement, copper futures in New York jumped 15% to a record high of $5.68 per pound. Prices have already risen 38% this year as companies rush to stockpile copper before the tariffs begin.

Analysts at J.P. Morgan report that the U.S. has imported nearly a full year’s supply in just six months. They expect imports to drop sharply after the tariffs are in place, as industries rely on existing stockpiles.

Global markets reacted differently—copper prices on the London Metal Exchange and Shanghai Futures Exchange dipped over 1% shortly after the news. Citi expects international copper prices to decline to around $8,800 per ton in the next three months, down from about $9,650.

China Responds to Trump’s Copper Tariff Plan

China’s Foreign Ministry has reacted to former U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposal to impose a 50% tariff on copper imports. In a brief statement, the ministry said it firmly opposes the politicization of economic and trade matters, emphasizing that such actions are not constructive for global trade stability.

Update: Trump’s 50% Copper Tariff to Hit Key Industries from August 1: Bloomberg

President Donald Trump has announced a 50% tariff on copper imports starting August 1, aiming to boost U.S. production of this critical metal. According to Bloomberg, the tariff will also cover semi-finished copper products used in key sectors like power grids, the military, data centers, and electronics. Trump said on Truth Social that copper is vital for semiconductors, aircraft, ships, ammunition, lithium-ion batteries, radar systems, and even hypersonic weapons. In February, the White House launched a Section 232 national security investigation into copper imports to justify such tariffs.
