India’s Union government has announced the removal of the 20% export duty on onions, effective from April 1. This decision, aimed at benefiting farmers, was formalized through a notification from the Department of Revenue after a request from the Department of Consumer Affairs. The move comes as onion prices in both wholesale and retail markets have softened due to an expected increase in supply from the rabi harvest.
The Ministry of Consumer Affairs stated that this step will help farmers secure better prices while ensuring affordability for consumers. The export duty, which had been in place since September 2024, did not significantly curb exports, as total onion shipments still reached 11.65 lakh tonnes by March 18 of the current financial year.
