India has ordered Samsung and its executives to pay $601 million in back taxes and penalties for allegedly evading tariffs on key telecom equipment, a government order revealed. The demand, one of the largest in recent years, follows a 2023 warning over misclassifying imports to avoid 10-20% duties on critical mobile tower components. Samsung, which reported a $955 million net profit in India last year, can challenge the order in a tax tribunal or court.
