India Cracks Down on Online Gaming Risks with Stricter Regulations

India has taken strict measures to address the risks of online gaming, including addiction, by blocking 1,298 websites and mobile apps linked to betting, gambling, and gaming between 2022 and 2024. According to Railway and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the government is committed to making the internet safe, open, trustworthy, and accountable for users.

To support this vision, the government revised the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021. These changes were made after extensive discussions with experts and stakeholders to tackle the social and economic challenges arising from online gaming.
