According to a report by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), Huawei is developing a new AI chip called the Ascend 910D, aiming to match or even outperform Nvidia’s powerful H100 chip.
WSJ said that Huawei has already approached some Chinese tech companies to test the technical feasibility of the new chip. The first batch of Ascend 910D samples is expected to be ready by late May.
The report noted that Huawei’s development of the chip is still in the early stages. A series of tests will be needed to assess the chip’s performance and prepare it for commercial use.
Huawei hopes the latest version of its Ascend AI processor series will offer stronger capabilities than Nvidia’s H100, which was released in 2022 and is widely used for AI training. Earlier models in Huawei’s Ascend lineup included the 910B and 910C.
