The European Union is working on a list of possible tariffs on U.S. services. This is part of a broader plan to retaliate if trade talks with Washington fail, according to two officials involved in the matter.
The European Commission is drafting the new measures in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement of a 30% tariff on EU goods. These U.S. tariffs are set to begin on August 1.
So far, the Commission has not shared the list with EU member states. However, Brussels had earlier warned that services could be included in future trade measures if negotiations did not progress.
One official noted that the EU’s response would not target only U.S. tech companies. The goal is to create a more balanced and strategic set of countermeasures.
This new move would be in addition to an existing EU proposal, which already includes tariffs on €72 billion worth of U.S. goods. That list includes items such as Boeing aircraft, cars, and bourbon.
The EU hopes these preparations will strengthen its position in talks and encourage a fair trade agreement with the U.S.
