An indefinite curfew was imposed in parts of Nagpur after violent clashes erupted over demands to remove the tomb of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. The unrest on Monday resulted in damage to multiple vehicles and left several people injured, including at least 15 police officers, one of whom is in critical condition. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis denounced the violence and called for urgent steps to restore peace and order.
Police said in a statement that Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) organized a protest, burning an effigy of Aurangzeb and his tomb while raising slogans demanding its removal. The group argues that the site should be replaced with a memorial honoring Maratha rulers. However, the VHP has refuted claims of any involvement in the violence.
The police officer said the situation got worse after some members of Muslim groups marched near a police station and threw stones at the police.
