Amazon’s cloud computing arm, Amazon Web Services (AWS), is facing a major outage that has affected several online platforms and services across the United States. According to outage-tracking website Downdetector, thousands of users have reported problems with AWS, Amazon.com, Prime Video, and Alexa.
In an official update, AWS confirmed that the issue is impacting services in the US-EAST-1 region. The company stated, “We are experiencing increased error rates and latencies for multiple AWS services. Our teams are actively working to identify the root cause and restore normal operations as quickly as possible.”
Major Outages Hit Popular Apps, Sites, and Banks
A wide range of popular apps and websites are experiencing outages, including Snapchat, Zoom, Roblox, Clash Royale, Fortnite, Canva, Signal, Coinbase, Duolingo, Slack, Pokémon Go, and PlayStation Network, among many others. Thousands of users are also reporting banking issues, with some cards being declined.
Other Platforms Affected
The disruption has also impacted several global apps and services that rely on AWS for cloud infrastructure. Users reported issues accessing Robinhood, Snapchat, Perplexity AI, and PayPal’s Venmo. Many Snapchat users were unable to log into the app, while Robinhood traders faced difficulties executing orders.
Downdetector data shows the first spike in outage reports occurred around 2:30 AM EST. The platform indicated that the majority of the issues were concentrated in the eastern United States, where AWS operates one of its largest data centers.
Impact on Amazon’s Own Services
Even Amazon’s internal platforms were hit by the disruption. Users reported difficulties checking out items on Amazon.com and streaming content on Prime Video. Some Alexa-enabled devices also failed to respond to commands.
AWS acknowledged that the outage might be affecting case creation through the AWS Support Center and its API, which may delay customer service responses.
AWS Working to Restore Services
The cloud provider assured customers that engineers are actively working to mitigate the issue. “We are engaged on this matter and continuing to make progress toward full recovery,” AWS noted in its latest update.
AWS powers a significant portion of the internet’s infrastructure, hosting everything from small websites to global applications. Outages in key regions like US-EAST-1 often cause widespread disruptions, highlighting the world’s dependence on Amazon’s cloud backbone.
Update: AWS Identifies Potential DynamoDB Issue in US-East-1
AWS has detected a possible root cause for increased error rates affecting DynamoDB APIs in the US-East-1 region.
Services and features that rely on this region, including IAM updates and DynamoDB global tables, may also be experiencing disruptions.
The issue appears linked to DNS resolution problems for the DynamoDB API endpoint in US-East-1.
AWS has applied initial mitigation measures to address the ongoing service disruptions. Early signs indicate that some affected services are starting to recover. During this period, users may still experience failed requests as AWS continues working toward a full resolution. Overall, the company is now seeing significant signs of recovery across multiple impacted services.
AWS confirms that global services and features dependent on US-East-1 have fully recovered, while Coinbase reports that the issue has been resolved, and users should no longer face degraded performance on the app or website.
