AT&T notifies users of data breach and resets millions of passcodes after discovering theft of personal data online at 8:22 p.m.
AT&T has initiated the process of informing millions of its customers regarding a recent discovery of stolen personal data circulating online.
The telecommunications giant confirmed on Saturday the existence of a dataset on the “dark web” containing sensitive information, including Social Security numbers, pertaining to approximately 7.6 million current AT&T account holders and 65.4 million former account holders.
Immediate actions have been taken by AT&T to address the breach, including the resetting of passcodes for current users. The company is also in the process of reaching out to affected account holders whose personal data has been compromised.
The source of the compromised data remains uncertain, with AT&T stating that it is unclear whether it originated from the company itself or one of its vendors.
The compromised data reportedly dates back to 2019 or earlier and does not seem to include financial details or call history. However, it may include other personal information such as email and mailing addresses, phone numbers, and birth dates.
