South Korean suppliers have received an initial order of 8.5 million OLED display panels from Apple for the upcoming redesigned iPad Pro models. Anticipated to be available this month, this refresh represents the most significant design overhaul for the Pro lineup since 2018.
For the upcoming ~11-inch and ~13-inch iPad Pro models, Apple has chosen different OLED display suppliers. Samsung Display exclusively handles the ~11-inch panels, with an order for 4 million units in 2024, while LG Display produces the ~13-inch panels with an order for 4.5 million units, suggesting a potential slight preference for the larger model. This allocation is attributed to shifts in Apple’s demand outlook and challenges in production capacity and yield for the new panel technologies required by both suppliers.
Rumors suggest that Apple is aiming for “unrivaled” display quality and a thinner, lighter design for its upcoming iPad Pro models. Recent leaked CAD drawings provide insights into the tablets’ slimness, with the larger iPad Pro expected to be over 1mm thinner. The quantity of OLED panels ordered from Samsung and LG might fluctuate post-initial production due to changes in production yield and Apple’s demand forecast for the new iPad Pro models. Apple’s latest shipments forecast reportedly indicates a decrease from the 10 million units projected for 2024 last year.
